Most of the LEGO sets I build are great right out of the box, but LEGO Ideas: Ship in a bottle, set 92177, was lacking. The ship inside the bottle is great, the bottle itself is great, and the base the bottle sits on is great, but something was missing.

As I worked through the build, my first thought was that there was not enough water in the bottle to really feel like an ocean. My second thought was that there was just enough room in front of the ship to put a Kraken.

I also had to find a way to stabilize the Kraken in the right position so that it looked like it was attacking the ship but did not move around in the bottle. I didn't have all the parts on hand, so I ordered the below parts from my favorite parts marketplaces.

PARTS:

I used 6 parts to create the stabilization and Kraken and 100-200 to bulk up the water:

From LEGO.com:

  • 1x2 Plate [translucent light blue x 2] part number: 28653 at LEGO.com

  • 1x2 Plate w/ Shaft 03.2 [reddish brown x1] part number 60478 at LEGO.com

  • 1x1 Plate w/ Upright Holder [reddish brown x 1] part number 44842 at LEGO.com

  • 1x1 Round [translucent light blue x 100 to 200] part number 34823 from LEGO.com

  • 1x1 Flat Tile, Round [reddish brown with yellow eye x 1* or whatever eye you want] part number 98138pb056 at Bricklink.com [the black and green eye in the parts photos is from the Dungeons & Dragons Displacer Beast extra parts - 98138pb407]

  • 1 Octopus [dark red or black x1] part number 6086 at Bricklink.com

*I only used 1 eye as I only view this set from one side, but if you are viewing it from both sides you may want to get 2 eyes.

Assembly Steps

Step 1:

Attach the 1x2 plates [translucent light blue] to the underside of the octopus.

Step 1: Attach the 1x2 plates to underside of octopus.

Step 2:

Attach the 1x1 Plate w Upright Holder to the 1x2 plate w/Shaft and attach on the far side of the octopus [this should be the right side of the octopus when viewed from above or the left side when viewed from beneath] and add the 1x1 flat tile round eye to the opposite or viewing side.

Step 3:

You will need to take apart your existing set to attach the octopus with stabilizer to the knob (shown below) on the front of the ship via the 1x1 plate w/ Upright Holder. I recommend removing the neck of the bottle and the top right panels of the bottle to give you room to place the octopus. There should be 3 tentacles per side of the ship.

Step 4:

Add in the extra 1x1 rounds [translucent light blue] as desired making sure to build up around the octopus and hide the stabilizer.

Step 5:

Replace the top right panels of the bottle and the bottle neck.
